National Center of Aquaculture

Aquaculture in Bhutan started in 1984 with the creation of a carp hatchery in Gelephu under Sarpang Dzongkhag. Initially known as the National Warm Water Fish Culture Centre (NWWFCC), this facility has played a pivotal role in advancing carp farming throughout the country. Over time, it transformed into the National Research and Development Centre for Aquaculture (NR&DAC). Today, NR&DAC operates under the supervision of the Department of Livestock within the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests. Its mission includes research, development, and promotion of sustainable aquaculture practices in Bhutan, aiming to enhance food security, support rural livelihoods, and conserve natural resources. Aquaculture continues to grow as an important sector in Bhutan, contributing to economic diversification and the sustainable management of freshwater resources across the country.
