Bird watching

Bird watching in Dagana, Bhutan, offers enthusiasts a rich opportunity to observe a diverse array of avian species in their natural habitats. Bhutan is renowned for its biodiversity, hosting many bird species, some of which are endangered or rare, such as the Imperial Heron, counted among the fifty rarest birds globally. Another notable species is the Black-Necked Crane, which breeds in Tibet and migrates over the Himalayas to Bhutan during the winter months. These majestic cranes can be spotted in Bhutanese valleys such as Phobjikha Valley in the west, Bumthang in central Bhutan, and Bumdeling in the east, where they gather in winter roosting sites from September to October before returning to Tibet between February and March.

In Dagana, specifically in Lhamoi Zhingkhag under the Tourism Flagship Program, bird watching sites have been developed to enhance the experience for visitors. The Forest Division of Lhamoi Zhingkhag Dungkhag has recorded approximately 221 bird species, highlighting the district’s importance as a birding destination. Bird watchers can explore a variety of habitats, from lush forests to riverbanks and open meadows, providing opportunities to spot both resident and migratory birds throughout the year. The conservation efforts and sustainable tourism practices in Dagana ensure that bird watching not only supports local livelihoods but also contributes to the conservation of Bhutan’s rich avian biodiversity for future generations to enjoy.
