Khurul Tsho

Khurul Tsho, also known as Palden Lhamoi Lhatsho, holds deep cultural and spiritual significance in Bhutanese folklore and traditions. Located approximately 10 kilometers from Lhamoi Dzingkha (Kalikhola) town in Dagana Dzongkhag, this ancient lake is believed to be several centuries old, according to local accounts. Its name, “Khurul,” meaning “Oyster” in Dzongkha, originates from the historical presence of oysters observed in the lake in ancient times.

The local community has safeguarded Khurul Tsho with great reverence throughout history. It is considered a sacred site where disturbances such as noise, pollution, or misconduct are believed to provoke natural calamities such as heavy rainfall, hailstorms, or other adverse weather conditions. This belief underscores the community’s commitment to preserving the sanctity of the lake and maintaining harmonious relations with nature.
