Gasa is one of the most far-flung places in Bhutan that adjoins the districts of Punakha, Thimphu and Wangdue Phodrang and with Tibet to its north. The valley is gifted with pristine natural beauty and very popular for nature trips comprising hundreds of Himalayan glacier lakes. This starkly beautiful region is located in an elevations ranging from 1500 to 4,500 meters experiences extremely long and hard winters and short beautiful summers. It has the smallest population with just about 3000 inhabitants with an area of 3,117.74 km2. The dominant language of the district is Dzongkha, the national language but languages of Layakha and Lunanakha, are dominantly spoken by semi-nomadic communities in the north part of the district. People of Laya also considered the nomads of western Bhutan live their livelihood on yaks textile products and harvesting of rare fungi cordyceps (fungi of high value, used in oriental medicine).
