Gelephu Town

Gelephu, alternatively spelled as Gelyephug, Gelegphu, Gaylegphug, or Gaylephug, is a bustling town and Thromde located in Sarpang District, Bhutan. Situated near the southern border with India, Gelephu serves as a pivotal entry point into Bhutan. It lies approximately 30 kilometers east of Sarpang, the administrative headquarters of the district. According to the 2017 census, Gelephu has a population of 9,858 residents, making it one of the larger urban centers in the region.

Gelephu plays a crucial role in Bhutan’s transportation network as one of the main road entry points from India. It is flanked by Phuntsholing to the west and Samdrup Jongkhar to the east, both of which are other significant entry points into Bhutan. This strategic location not only facilitates trade and commerce but also makes Gelephu a hub for travelers entering Bhutan by road. The town itself offers amenities such as markets, accommodations, and administrative services, catering to both local residents and visitors exploring southern Bhutan.
