Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR)

A must-do activity in Darjeeling is riding the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), commonly known as the ‘Toy Train.’ This narrow-gauge rail, with a track width of just 2 feet, runs in a zigzag and looping pattern between Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri. Built between 1879 and 1881, it ascends to an altitude of over 7,000 feet, making it one of the oldest and highest railway lines in the world. In 1999, the DHR was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 78 km journey passes through 13 stations, including Ghoom, which is the highest railway station in India, and offers travelers a unique experience steeped in history and engineering marvels.

The train still operates with the original steam engines, attracting tourists worldwide who seek to experience this piece of history. The slow pace of the journey makes it ideal for taking in the stunning scenic views, with the opportunity to hop on and off along the way. Travelers are treated to magnificent views of Darjeeling town below, along with the majestic snow-capped Mt. Kanchenjunga. With its extraordinary loops and breathtaking vistas, the DHR journey is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable and scenic train rides in India.
