Ghoom Monastery

Ghoom Monastery, also known as Yiga Choeling, is a must-visit destination in Darjeeling, situated at an altitude of around 8,000 feet. Established in 1850 by Lama Sherab Gyatso, it is one of the oldest Tibetan monasteries in the region. The monastery is renowned for its 15-feet tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, located in the main hall. Visitors are drawn not only to its spiritual significance but also to its vast collection of rare Buddhist manuscripts, including the 108-volume Kangyur, which is believed to contain the teachings of the Buddha himself. The walls of the monastery are adorned with intricate paintings that depict Buddhist literature and Tibetan art.

The history of Ghoom Monastery is rich, having been founded by the Mongolian astrologer and monk Sokpo Sherab Gyatso, who managed its operations until 1905. This spiritual and historical site offers visitors a chance to connect with Tibetan Buddhism’s deep traditions while immersing themselves in its tranquil ambiance and stunning artistic heritage.
