Tenzing Rock is a prominent landmark in Darjeeling, named after the legendary Tenzing Norgay, one of the first men to conquer Mount Everest alongside Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. This large natural rock serves as a training area for climbers—both amateurs and professionals—who come here to practice their skills. Tenzing Norgay himself is said to have practiced here, adding a significant historical touch to this destination.
The rock holds a special place for adventure lovers, and it is especially well-known for the annual rock-climbing competitions organized by the Indian Army. The event draws many climbers, and if you’re a rock-climbing enthusiast, it offers a chance to witness some impressive feats.
While the climb can be exhilarating, caution is advised, especially during wet weather, as the rock surface can become slippery due to nearby meandering streams or rain. Despite the challenge, the rock remains a popular spot for tourists, especially those with a love for adventure.
Alongside the rock, you’ll find several small stalls offering local delicacies like Maggie noodles, momos, and steaming cups of chai and coffee—perfect for a rest after an exciting climb.
