Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre in Darjeeling is a significant cultural and social spot that offers visitors a chance to shop while also gaining insight into the life of Tibetan refugees in India. Established with the aim of making the Tibetan community in Darjeeling self-sufficient, the centre has grown into a popular tourist destination. It provides a platform for Tibetan refugees to create and sell handmade products, helping them become financially independent.

The centre showcases a wide range of Tibetan handicrafts, including wooden carvings, woollen items, shawls, leather jackets, and more. Many of these products are exported to 36 countries worldwide, making it a great place to buy authentic and unique souvenirs.

Aside from its shopping appeal, the centre offers a deeper understanding of the resilience and culture of the Tibetan community in exile. It’s a place where visitors can learn about the traditions and struggles of the Tibetan refugees, and witness their craftsmanship firsthand. The centre started with just four workers and now supports over 130 families, contributing to the community’s self-sustainability.

Timings: Open from 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Saturday (closed on Sundays).
