Major festivals celebrated in the region include Dashain, Tihar, Buddha Jayanti, Christmas, Holi, and Ram Navami, alongside local festivals unique to different ethnic communities. Buddhist groups such as the Lepchas, Bhutias, Sherpas, Yolmos, Gurungs, and Tamangs celebrate the New Year, Losar, in January/February with festivals like Maghe Sankranti and Tendong Lho Rumfaat, while Kirati groups like the Limbu, Rai, and Yakkha celebrate their own traditional festivals such as Ubhauli Udhauli and Sakela.
The Darjeeling Carnival, a cultural event initiated by The Darjeeling Initiative, was held annually and featured a vibrant display of the region’s rich musical and cultural heritage. This ten-day carnival, celebrated during winter, has become a highlight for showcasing the town’s unique blend of traditions. Throughout the year, various cultural festivals are held in Darjeeling and its surrounding areas, adding to the lively and diverse atmosphere of the region.
